"CORTIJO LA YUCCA"...
The holiday cottage CORTIJO LA YUCCA is accessed by a 4 km long track starting from the coastal town of Torrox. The track leads up and has in parts fantastic views of the Mediterranean Sea. After a small hill you get into a valley and our holiday cottage is situated above the river Rio Güe - in summer with dry riverbed.CORTIJO LA YUCCA is built in the traditional style of the region, with clay tiled roofs and gabled ceilings, so the rooms are quite high as well as very cosy, rustic and airy. The house was begun in the 19th century by the great-grandfather of the present owner, Mercedes, who used only a pick and shovel. “Poco a poco” (little by little), as they say in Spain, the house became the central point of a fruitful farm (finca) which provided for a large family. Over the decades, the farm was transformed, with much care and patience, into the rustic 90m² house with swimming pool that exists today.
The house has charm and breathes history. It is surrounded by lush greenery and a large yukka tree dominates in front, giving the house its name. There is an array of tropical plants including a magnificent, flowering Bugainvillea, some smaller Yuccas and various trees and bushes which provide a blaze of colour and Mediterranean flair.
In front of the house there is a large, shaded patio with seating, table and a brick barbecue nearby. The 7.5m long pool is below the house with stairs leading down to the pool terrace, which is an open, sunny place to relax and sunbathe. The patio is also the entrance to the house, leading into a hallway and then to the living room and open plan kitchen and the other direction leads to the 3 bedrooms. The living room has a sofa corner with 2 sofas beside an open fireplace. There is also a new 32 inch flat screen TV with a variety of international programs (ASTRA) from the satellite dish antenna. Parking is available for several cars.
Cortijo la Yucca is situated at the intersection of Torrox, Frigiliana and Competa, approximately 8.5km north of Torrox Village. The nearest beach resorts are Torrox Costa, about a 25 minute drive, or Nerja, 35 minutes on the motorway. The
last 3.7 km of the approach road to the house, which connects to Competa and Torrox, is not yet paved. It is passable from May to the end of September with any car. When the weather is bad, however, which can happen during the rest of the year, a sturdier car would be necessary (a Citroen Berlingo, Renault Kangoo, etc.) or a car with 4 wheel drive.
The motorway is about 8.5km from the house and from here other places are easily accessed. Nerja is a 15 minute drive where there are some lovely beaches and natural beauty spots. To Granada and into the skiing areas of the Sierra Nevada is about 1 hour and Malaga Airport is 40 minutes.
